Airway—Ventilator PEEP/CPAP

 

Clinical Indications:                                                               Level: EMT-P only

 

Ø      Respiratory distress in the conscious patient suffering from presumed pulmonary edema

Ø      Non-responsive to simple oxygenation via non-rebreather mask

 

 

Procedure:

 

a.       Ensure an adequate oxygen supply to the ventilation device.

b.      Explain the procedure to the patient.

c.       Consider the placement of a nasopharyngeal airway.

d.      Place the deliver mask over the patient’s mouth and nose.

e.       Secure the mask with the provided straps or other provided devices.

f.        Begin with a low pressure (e.g., 5cm H2O) and increase as the patient begins to tolerate or the clinical situation dictates.

g.       Monitor the patient’s respiratory status and vital signs with frequent reassessment.

h.       Document time and response on the ACR.

 

 

 

 

 

Certification Requirements:

Successfully complete an annual skill evaluation including the indications, contraindications, technique, and possible complications of the procedure.
