Clinical Indications: Levels: EMT-I & EMT-P
Ø Collection of a patient’s blood for laboratory analysis
Procedure:
a. Utilize universal precautions as per OSHA.
b. Select vein and prep as usual.
c. Select appropriate blood-drawing tubes and collection devices.
d. Place a venous tourniquet on patient’s selected arm.
e. Draw the appropriate tubes of blood for lab testing.
f. Assure that the blood samples are labeled with the correct information (a minimum of the patient’s name, along with the date and time of collection).
g. Properly dispose of any needles that were used in an approved container.
h. Deliver the blood tubes to the appropriate person at the hospital.
Certification Requirements:
Successfully complete an annual skill evaluation including the indications, contraindications, technique, and possible complications of the procedure.
