Stroke Screen-LA Prehospital

 

Clinical Indications:                                                               Levels: EMT-B, EMT- D,

                                                                                                             EMT-I, EMT-P

 

Ø      Suspected stroke patient

 

Procedure:

 

a.       Assess and treat suspected stroke patients as per protocol.

b.      The Los Angeles Pre-hospital Stroke Screen (LAPSS) form will be completed for all suspected stroke patients (see appendix).

c.       There are six screening criteria items on the LAPSS form.

d.      Screen the patient for the following criteria:

1.      age > 45 year old

2.      no history of seizure disorder

3.      new onset of symptoms in last 24 hours

4.      patient ambulatory prior to event

5.      blood glucose level between 60-400

6.      The final criterion consists of performing a patient exam looking for facial droop, unilateral grip weakness and/or absence, or unilateral arm weakness.  One of these exam components must be positive to answer “yes” on the screening form.

e.       If all of the LAPSS screening criteria are met (“yes” to all criteria), alert the receiving hospital of a possible stroke patient as early as possible.

f.        All section of the LAPSS form must be completed and attached to the ACR.

g.       Document the procedure, time and patient response on the ACR.

 

 

 

 

 

Certification Requirements:

Successfully complete an annual skill evaluation including the indications, contraindications, technique, and possible complications of the procedure.
