Airway Respirator Operation
Clinical Indications: Levels: EMT-I & EMT-P
Ø Transport of an intubated patient.
Procedure:
a. Confirm the placement of the endotracheal tube as per airway protocol.
b. Ensure an adequate oxygen delivery source to the respirator.
c. Preoxygenate the patient with 100% O2 with a bag valve mask.
d. Set values and rates on the respirator for patient size.
e. Remove BVM and attach tube to respirator.
f. Assess breath sounds and allow for adequate expiratory time. Adjust respirator setting as clinically indicated.
g. If worsening of patient conditions occurs, a decrease in oxygen saturation, or any question regarding the function of the respirator, remove the respirator and ventilate the patient with a BVM.
h. Document time, complication, and patient response to the procedure on the ACR.
Certification Requirements:
Successfully complete an annual skill evaluation including the indications, contraindications, technique, and possible complications of the procedure.
