Airway—Nebulizer Inhalation Therapy

 

Clinical Indications:                                                               Levels: EMT-I & EMT-P

 

Ø      Patients experiencing a bronchospasm.

 

 

Procedure:

 

a.       Gather and assemble the necessary equipment.

b.      Instill the premixed Albuterol into the reservoir well of the nebulizer.

c.       Connect the nebulizer to the O2 source at 4-6 liters per minute or adequate flow to produce a steady, visible mist.

d.      Instruct the patient to inhale through the mouthpiece of the nebulizer.  The needs to have a good seal around the mouthpiece.

e.       The treatment should last until the solution is depleted.  Tapping the reservoir well near the end of the treatment will assist in utilizing all of the solution.

f.        Monitor the patient for medication effects and change in condition.

g.       Reassess patient’s vital signs, breath sounds, and presentation to determine the need for additional treatments.

h.       Assess and document patient’s respiratory effort before and after the treatment.

i.         Document the treatment, dose, and route on the ACR.

 

 

   Certification Requirements:

Successfully complete an annual skill evaluation including the indications, contraindications, technique, and possible complications of the procedure.
