
Standards Procedure (Skill)
Clinical Indications: Levels: EMT-B, EMT- D,
EMT-I, EMT-P
> Any child that can be measured with the Broselow-Luten Resuscitation Tape.
Procedure:
a. Scene size-up, including universal precautions, scene safety, environmental hazards assessment, need for additional resources, by-stander safety, and patient/caregiver interaction.
b. Assess the patient using the pediatric triangle of ABCs.
Ø A—airway and appearance: speech/cry, muscle tone, inter-activeness, look/gaze, movement of extremities
Ø B—breathing: work of breathing, absence or abnormal airway sounds, use of accessory muscles, nasal flaring, body positioning
Ø C—Circulation to skin: pallor, mottling, cyanosis
c. Establish spinal immobilization if spinal injury is suspected.
d. Establish responsiveness for appropriate age of patient (AVPU, GSC, etc.)
e. Assign color code using the Broselow-Luten tape.
f. Assess disability (pulse, motor function, sensory, capillary refill)
g. Perform a focused history and physical exam. Keep in mind that pediatric patients are prone to hypothermia and thus should not be left uncovered any longer than necessary to perform the exam.
h. Record vital signs (BP for > 3 years of age, cap refill for < 3 years of age).
i. Include immunizations, allergies, past medical history, medications (including OTC), last oral intake and events leading up to the injury or illness.
j. Treat the chief complaint per protocol.
k. Document findings and interventions on the ACR.
Certification Requirements:
Successfully complete an annual skill evaluation including the indications, contraindications, technique, and possible complications of the procedure.
