Standards Procedure (Skill)
Clinical Indications: Levels: EMT-I & EMT-P
Ø To assist in determining and documenting the correct
placement of an endotracheal or nasotracheal tube.
Procedure:
a. Complete intubation as per the Airway Intubation—Oral or Airway intubation—nasal protocols.
b. Place the bulb device over the proximal end of the ETT or NTT. Squeeze the bulb to remove air prior to securing the bulb to the tube.
c. Once secured on the tube, release the bulb.
d. If the bulb expands evenly and easily, this indicates probable tracheal intubation. Assessment of breath sounds should also be performed.
e. If bulb does not expand easily, this indicates possible esophageal intubation and the need to reassess and correct the airway exists.
f. Document time and result in the ACR.
Certification Requirements:
Successfully complete an annual skill evaluation including the indications, contraindications, technique, and possible complications of the procedure.
