MEPERIDINE (DEMEROL)                            

 

Class: Narcotic analgesic (schedule II)

 

Mechanism of Action: CNS depression, acts an opiate receptor in brain, providing analgesia and sedation, rate of onset is slightly faster than morphine but effects are shorter.

 

Indications: Moderate to sever pain

 

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, head injury, undiagnosed abdominal pain, patients receiving MAOIs

 

Precautions: Hypotension, respiratory depressant

 

Side Effects: Respiratory depression, blurred vision, decreased level of consciousness, hallucinations, and abdominal cramps

 

Dosage: 25-50mg IV, IM
