MANNITOL

 

Class: Osmotic Diuretic

 

Mechanism Of Action: Inhibits sodium and water absorption in the kidneys.

 

Indications: Acute cerebral edema. Blood transfusion reactions

 

Contraindications: Acute pulmonary edema. Severe pulmonary congestion. Profound hypovolemia

 

Precautions: Crystallization begins as temperature approaches 45 degrees F.
If crystallization occurs should be warmed slowly in boiling water until crystals disappear.

 

Side Effects: Chills. Headache. Dizziness. Lethargy. Mental Status. Chest Pain.

 

Dosage: 1.5-2.0 g/kg slow IV bolus or IV infusion.

The slower the rate, decreases chance of overload and CHF.
