INSULIN (HUMALIN, NOVOLIN)

 

Class: Hormone, antihyperglycemic

 

Mechanism Of Action: Combines with insulin receptors present on cell membranes which promotes glucose entry into cell and decreases blood glucose level.

 

Indications: Diabetic Ketoacidosis. Hyperglycemia. Hyperkalemia.

 

Contraindication: Administer only when hyperglycemia is confirmed.

 

Precaution: Continuous measuring of blood glucose levels.

 

Side Effects: Hypoglycemia. Itching. Swelling. Redness.

 

Dosage:

5-10 units of regular insulin followed by 0.1 units/kg/hour

5-20 units of regular insulin IM/SQ
