ACETAMINOPHEN

 

Class: Antipyretic, nonoploid analgesic

 

Mechanism of Action: Antipyretic action results from inhibition of prostaglandins in the CNS.  It does not possess any anti-inflammatory properties.

 

Indication: Fever

 

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, Intolerance to alcohol, saccharin, table sugar or yellow dye.

 

Precautions:  Anemia, Hepatic disease, renal disease, chronic alcoholism, Elderly, Pregnancy/Lactation

 

Side Effects:  Drowsiness, Rash, Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain

 

Dosage: Adult: 600-800mg orally – single dose

                     Pediatric: 5-10mg/kg
